Maryam Trowell Testifies Before DC Council

Representing Live It Learn It, co-executive director Maryam Trowell testified during a D.C. Council hearing on a critical issue facing DC students—engagement, with references to how experiential learning reduces chronic absenteeism and truancy because it addresses disengagement. Maryam participated in Georgetown University's Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate in 2023.

Manique Buckmon Launches Youth Arts Education Venture

Manique Buckmon announces the launch of Creative Compass, inspiring youth through artistic discovery. Manique previously served as the Senior Director of Program at Art Works Now for five years. Manique completed the Leadership Greater Washington Rising Leaders Program in 2022.

Betty Gentle Joins the Coalition for Nonprofit Equity Steering Committee

Betty Gentle recently joined the Steering Committee for the Coalition for Nonprofit Equity, a collective of more than 1,000 DC community-based nonprofit organizations. Members of the Coalition share a common goal - ensuring all DC residents have access to the vital community-based services and supports they need to not only survive but thrive. Betty is the Senior Advocacy & Community Engagement Specialist at SOME (So Other Might Eat) and completed Georgetown University's Center for Public & Nonprofit Leadership's Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate in 2021 through LeaderBridge.

Nel-Sylvia Guzman Promoted to Executive Director and Presents to National Sexual Assault Conference

Nel-Sylvia Guzman of Safe Sisters Circle was recently promoted to the Executive Director role. Nel-Sylvia previously served as the Managing Attorney, Director of Legal Services, Deputy Director, and Acting Executive Director during her three-year tenure at Safe Sisters Circle. She recently presented at the National Sexual Assault Conference, focusing on providing culturally specific legal services to Black women survivors. Nel-Sylvia completed the Public Narrative training in 2023 and the Idari Collective Self-ology cohort in 2024. Congratulations Nel-Sylvia!

Bryan Jackson Presents to Greater Washington Society of CPAs

Bryan Jackson led a webinar for the Nonprofit Section of the Greater Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants on "Turbulence in the Talent Pool." Topics included finding and retaining qualified talent, generational connections, equity issues, burnout, staff engagement, and more. Bryan serves as the Senior Consultant for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, & Justice at Nonprofit HR. Bryan completed the Georgetown University Center of Public and Nonprofit Leadership Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate in 2020.

Michele Booth Cole Presents at National Conference on Child Abuse Prevention

Michele Booth Cole presented at the 2024 Colloquium of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. As the Executive Director of Safe Shores - The DC Children's Advocacy Center, she shared what Safe Shores has done and learned over the past 21 years regarding centering racial equity in the Child Advocacy Center. Michele participated in the Public Narrative program in 2021.

Dr. Christina Sessoms joins DC Office of Education Through Employment Pathways Board

Dr. Christina Sessoms was appointed to the Office of Education Through Employment Pathways Public Stakeholder Advisory Board via DC’s Office of the Deputy Mayor of Education. Dr. Sessoms is the BAM-FI College & Career Program Manager at Youth Guidance - DC and completed the Leadership Greater Washington Rising Leaders program in 2023.

George Garcia joins DC Mayor's Office of LGBTQ Affairs as Grants and Partnerships Specialist

George Garcia began a new role as the Grants and Partnerships Specialist with the DC Mayor's Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Affairs and has been serving since February 2023. George previously spent time with Vida Senior Services and the Latin American Youth Center. George completed the Leadership Greater Washington Rising Leaders program in 2018. Asia Vianna Leak Featured in World Mental Health Day Video

Crimsonbridge community partner Generation Hope featured Asia Vianna Leak in a video highlighting the importance of mental health support for college students who are parents (known as "student parents") and their children. Asia is the Senior Mental Health Manager at Generation Hope and completed Leadership Montgomery's Emerging Leaders program in 2022.

George Garcia Promoted to Director of Operations at DC Mayor's Office of LGBTQ Affairs

George Garcia was recently promoted to Director of Operations of the DC Mayor's Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Affairs. Chrissey Nguyen Klockner Interviewed by AFP Global

Chrissey Nguyen Klockner was recently interviewed by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Chrissey shared insights related to Board diversity and representation, the importance of personal change, and the role of individual mindsets in fostering a culture of equity. Chrissey is the Chief of Staff at Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School and completed the Georgetown University Center of Public and Nonprofit Leadership Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate in 2023.

Yurani Sandoval Led Webinar for Washington Hispanic Chamber

Yurani Sandoval was a speaker for the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce summer webinar series. Yurani focused on empowering Hispanic business owners through mastering development strategy and crafting the most persuasive pitch to funders. She is the Founder and CEO of Women Palante which empowers and supports Latina women through entrepreneurship, wellness education, and resources. Yurani completed the Positive Intelligence program in 2023.

Daon McLarin Johnson Publishes New Book

Daon McLarin Johnson wrote and published Becoming Lion: An Exploration in Mentorship and The Quest for Identity, an anthology of essays devoted to the sacred intersection of mentorship and identity formation. Daon currently serves as Regional Manager – DC Metro Market for MENTOR Maryland | DC, and completed the Georgetown University Center of Public and Nonprofit Leadership Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate in 2017.

Lavontte Chatmon Presented at Spur Local’s National Small Nonprofit Summit

Lavontte Chatmon presented on board engagement at Spur Local’s 2024 National Small Nonprofit Summit. Lavontte is the Interim Executive Director of Court Watch Montgomery, which ensures that all victims of intimate abuse in Montgomery County have access to responsive justice and vital services. Lavontte completed the Positive Intelligence program in 2023 and is currently participating in Strengths Leadership Coaching this year.

Javier Bustamante Serves as Panelist for Immigration Conference

Javier Bustamante, Director of the Center for Cultural Engagement at The Catholic University of America, helped organize and served as a panelist at The Catholic University of America and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Immigration Conference. More than 250 individuals came together to gain knowledge and learn about the changing realities at the U.S. border and beyond. Javier completed the Georgetown CPNL Nonprofit Management Executive Certificate in 2018.

Yasmine Arrington Brooks’ ScholarCHIPS Featured on National TV

ScholarCHIPS provides funding and a support network to college-bound young adults who have incarcerated parents. Kamren Rollins Interviewed by Early Learning Nation

Southeast Children's Funds Chief Operating Officer, Kamren Rollins, spoke in an interview with Early Learning Nation at the National Black Child Development Institute's annual conference, where he highlighted 30 years of commitment to learning, growth, and wraparound services for DC's youth in Wards 7 and 8. Jeremiah Lowery accepted a new role as the Director of Policy Advocacy for Legal Aid DC, the District’s oldest and largest civil legal services organization. Jeremiah joins the Legal Aid DC team after spending four years as the Director of Advocacy for the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. Lupi Quinteros-Grady Speaks at The World Bank Report Launch

Lupi Quinteros-Grady, President & CEO of the Latin American Youth Center, spoke at the launch event for The World Bank's report, "Choosing our Future: Education for Climate Action." The event spotlighted how governments can harness education for climate action and adapt schools for climate change. Shandell Richards Featured on WUSA9

Shandell Richards was featured on WUSA9 to talk about Horton’s Kids Summer Fest, which brings fun and learning together for children growing up in Southeast DC. In the feature, she promoted the Home Runs for Horton’s Kids fundraising event at Nationals Park which has raised $15 million since 2008 for childhood enrichment programs. Shandell completed the LGW Rising Leaders Program in 2019.

Daniel Rico Quoted by the Washington Post

Daniel Rico was quoted by the Washington Post in an article about funding cuts to Olaiya’s Cradle - two homes run by Sasha Bruce Youthwork - and the rallying response from donors. As the Chief Development Officer at Sasha Bruce, he shared his lived experience and advocated for long-lasting funding for stable housing. Lupi Quinteros-Grady Spoke to Maryland Education Summit

Lupi Quinteros-Grady spoke at the Maryland Latinos Unidos (MLU) Pathways to Progress: Latino Education Summit for Equity alongside community leaders who positively impact the Latino community. Lupi participated in the Latino American Youth Center’s Summer Employment program as a teenager and now serves as the President and CEO of the Latino American Youth Center, empowering young Latinos to have a successful transition to adulthood. Tiffany Turner-Allen was honored with the Prince George’s County Chamber of Commerce's Women’s History Month Gratitude Award, which recognizes the trailblazing work of women in business in Prince George’s County for their resilience and innovation.
